Individual
analysis of 3 existing Horror Trailers in booklet
I will be analyzing three different monster sub
genres focusing on: Mis en scene, Camera, Editing and Sound.
Sub genre Monsters: Godzilla 1954 trailer
The
sub genre of monsters is a classic trait as a horror film as it is easy to
identify and audience are very attracted to it. Specifically speaking of the
Godzilla trailer made in 1954 by Japanese creator Ishiro Honda. Firstly I
noticed how sound played a pivotal role in emphasizing the effect of a 60ft
monster, the pace of the sound was also admirable as the frantic, fluctuated
music pace matched with the trailer enticing the audience into wanting why that
was. In addition editing techniques such as jump cuts were evident in the
trailer as they helped build tension to the trailer quickly building
anticipation for the audience. Furthermore cross cutting was integrated into
the trailer as the audience saw from two different views. Finally close up
shots were also presented in the trailer from a female which may connote that
she is a damsel in distress and to exaggerate the fear that the humans were going
through.
Sub genre Thriller: Buried 2010 trailer
The
sub genre of thriller is regarded as being outside the horror genre where they
intended to make to centre of danger coming from an outside menace. First thing
noticeable to me is the high pitch sound that jolts the trailer into the very
nature of its intentions which is to create an atmosphere of tension and
curiosity. In addition to this the natural sounds of the character’s scream and
voice help isolate the character even more intriguing the audience ever so
more. Camera techniques such as panning, extreme close up shots and tilting were
all used in the trailer to display different angles to the audience as the
actor was hardly moving. To set the scene the character had on a dusty/dirty
watch to set the scene and also reiterate the amount of oxygen he had left
creating more tension towards the audience. Finally jump cuts were also seen as it helped
create a sense a mystery as to why the character is trapped inside a coffin
ultimately leading to his death.
Sub genre Psychological: Insidious 2010 trailer
Psychological
horror is becoming more in demand as it infiltrates a new realistic fear into
their new audiences, playing on the fear of the unknown with the idea that evil
forces exist in this world. As in all horror films thrive on is sound and how
it manipulates the audiences mind into fear. Furthermore sudden loud sounds
also help create a burst of scare seducing the audience into thinking the
worst. Secondly mis en scene was also evident as casual clothing was worn by
the characters to show that their living ordinary life’s. In addition to this the trailer also composed
of using a mask as the sinister threat adding the effect of a psychological
danger. Secondly jump cuts were used
again in a horror trailer to add more effect on the trailer creating an
atmosphere of terror. In addition to
this an established shot was shown to set the scene which was the house, making
it more realistic.
Good, clarity in your analysis here. WT C
