Essay on Representation theorists

Representation essay

The trailer that I will be analysing is from ‘Splash slasher Productions’ and it is called ‘Never sleep again’, reason being is because they included multiple representation theorists that can be explored within their teaser trailer. Theorists such as Charles Derry, Carol Clover and Sarah Dobbs have all been located within the teaser trailer which helps follow the typical conventions of a horror trailer.

Firstly I noticed throughout the trailer Carol Clover’s theory of the use of a final girl, due to the character being the last person to actually confront the source of evil itself. For example in the trailer the final was being dragged viciously across the ground by the antagonist which is evidence for the confrontation between the protagonist and antagonist. In other trailers such as ‘Cabin in the Woods’ the same character type is seen there as well which may imply that the female protagonist is adopting masculine features to overcome evil. Strengths of having a final girl character helps introduce the other typical stock characters into a trailer or film.

Secondly the trailer also introduces Sarah Dobbs’s theory of having the protagonist a female character. The representation of having a female protagonist may be to include different sub-texts inside the trailer. This is evident throughout the trailer as the female protagonist is simply seen as a target to the antagonist. They accomplished this through the use of shots of the female protagonist experiencing fear and the final shot of the antagonist taking her away, in completing this they were able to show how they converted it to allow the audience to almost in a way sympathise for the female character. The strengths of having this incorporated into my own trailer will be beneficial as it allows the audience to read a different message as it would show who my protagonist was.

Finally out of all the theorist revealed I would say Charles Derry’s theory was obvious the most. In the trailer we see how they used the demonic spirit to play on the fear of unknown. As the antagonist is per-dominantly male we see how they play on the fact that woman are weaker than men. Splash Slasher productions achieve this by the use of not actually seeing the protagonist but just by experiencing his presence. The use of using low key lighting helps play a part in the mysterious nature of the demonic spirit.

Digital Technology

Digital technology is the way of how over the years it has become more developed than ever, allowing other users to create products from their own initiative. Softwares such as Photoshop, InDesign, Final cut pro and Logic Pro X all help allow the producer to experiment with different elements of a design.  For my AS coursework I was instructed to create a music magazine of my choice, however in A2 I created a horror genre film trailer which focused on the slasher sub-genre. Throughout the two years I have acknowledge the opportunity of being able to work with certain editing softwares that was accessible for me to utilize. I have also used these softwares to help me develop my work over the two years but more so in the second as my knowledge of them has increased.  Firstly I would like to start of with my Preliminary task that was to create a college music magazine. As this was completed in my first year my knowledge of the editing softwares was at amateur level, this meant ...

Essay on Narrative Theorists

Essay on Narrative Theorists Introduction The trailer that I will be analysing is from ‘Jumpscare Productions’ and it is called ‘The Collector’, reason being is because they included multiple narrative theorists that can be explored within their teaser trailer. Narrative is a story that is created in a constructive format that describes a sequence of fictional or non-fictional events.  Mostly Todorov and Levi-Strauss are seen exponentially in the trailer as they would mostly be classed as the foundations of a typical horror film teaser trailer. The fact that they allow the audience to only view the equilibrium and disequilibrium but disregard the resolution shows their knowledge on the narrative theorist Todorov. Paragraph 1:  Expanding on their use of the narrative theorist Todorov helped allow the trailer to develop a structured base which included the Equilibrium and Disequilibrium. Following this pattern allowed the audience to follow the trailer identifying...
